Rezulin is an oral medication prescribed for patients with Type-2 diabetes. Approved in 1997, Rezulin remained on the U.S. market until March 2000, due to the liver failure Rezulin caused resulting in at least 63 deaths.

There have been an estimated 430 Rezulin patients that suffered liver failure, including 391 deaths. It was found that a Rezulin patient's risk of liver failure is increased 1,200 times by taking the diabetes drug.

What are Rezulin side effects patients have experienced?
Liver damage Rezulin can cause is hard to detect due to the minimal symptoms during the beginning stages of the disease. Later stages of liver damage Rezulin patients may experience jaundice, abdominal pain, nausea, clay colored stools, and dark urine. Rezulin liver damage can result in the need for a liver transplant or death. Heart failure has been linked to the use of Rezulin as well.

The company first knew of at least 12 people who had suffered potentially life-threatening liver damage during Rezulin's clinical trials in 1993. In the first 18 months Rezulin was on the market, there were 56 reports from FDA records showing heart failure.

Rezulin Recall

The Rezulin recall took place on March 21, 2000, nearly two years after Public Citizen consumer group petitioned the FDA for the immediate removal of the diabetes drug and after two million people used the drug. Public Citizen petitioned for the Rezulin recall in July 1998 after reports of liver damage. When the FDA finally announced the Rezulin recall, there were 90 cases of liver failure reported from diabetes patients taking the drug, including 63 deaths.
